If you need a belt to keep them in place, and most people do, then you really need 7 loops not 5.Buy the size needed for the waist to fit.Cut off the excess length, then hem.I do not hem with a sewing machine. The below procedure works for jeans as well.Put pants on without shoes. Fold up and safety pin behind the heel on one leg, with the pant just touching the floor. Mark with a pencil at the crease.Turn pants inside out, and measure from the pant leg end to the mark. Subract 1 3/4".Measure that distance from the bottom and make a mark on each side, plus the middle, and draw a line across all 3. Cut off. Measure, mark, and cut the other pant leg.Make a 3/4 inch fold from the bottom, iron flat on both sides. Fold again, iron flat on both sides.Secure the last fold with fabric glue on both sides, clamp with 5-7 binder clamps, and wait a couple days for the fabric glue to completely cure (3 days before washing, 2 days before wearing). Two folds instead of one, because otherwise, when you wash them, the fabric at the cut will be exposed and will leak thread from the material. Yes, 3/4 + 3/4 is not 1 3/4. The extra is because you lose about 1/4" after two folds, and because your cut and folds won't be perfect. If you mess up, this wasn't a huge investment to begin with. You'll get better and faster very quickly. I use Aleene's Super Fabric Adhesive, and it holds the hem very well.
